Online Safety - Social Media "Influencers"

Recent high-profile news stories have drawn attention to the risks to children presented by popular social media influencers.

Children and young people can be fed a diet of focussed online content simply as a result of the algorithms operating on popular sites like TikTok and Youtube.

Sometimes the messages they receive from influencers are misogynistic or extreme. Over time these can impact on the thinking and attitudes of young people.

You may have heard of the 'Manosphere' which is the name given to the online spaces particularly promoting masculinity and misogyny. It includes for example, incels, pickup artists (PUA) and Men Going Their Own Way (MGTOW).

Schools should carefully consider how to include lessons about online influence and the risks posed, as part of their online safety curriculum. Not necessarily drawing attention to particular online celebrities but nevertheless exploring the unwelcome impact that can sometimes result from content of this nature.

Project Evolve has free resources and lesson plans to help schools address issues like this in the curriculum.

Operation Encompass expands

Operation Encompass calls and emails are made or sent to schools in Leicestershire, Leicester City and Rutland when children have been present during a police visit involving domestic abuse.

The purpose of the calls/emails is to enable staff in schools to support those children as needed.

Operation Encompass is expanding to include all incidents where police consider children may have been traumatized by the situation. This could include for example a drugs raid or the arrest of a parent for any reason.

Schools will be informed where a family member is going into prison or when a child has been reported missing.

This information will help staff in schools to support those children and to understand the reasons should their behaviour become more challenging for example.
